PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — Pittsburgh police have charged two parents with a disturbing case of child abuse involving four of their young children.

There are lengthy criminal affidavits and a long list of disturbing charges against the parents involving horrible allegations against four of their children.

The two young boys and girls are ages 5 through 13 and live according to court documents, on Brightridge Street on the NorthSide.

Marc Safari and Eveline Ntahimpera according to police information abused four of their children over the past month at their home in Perry South.

This is information according to court paperwork that was disclosed to police upon doctor’s exams of the children at Children’s Hospital.

Police said one boy had welts on his legs from being hit with a stick and had burns from an iron.

Eveline, is even accused of threatening to cut the children’s hands off with a knife she’d heated over the stove.

Police said the four children all individually told doctors they were being abused at home.

Marc Safari denied the allegations but according to police, lunged at one of his daughters while meeting with Children, Youth and Families and had to be restrained.

One neighbor said she never saw any signs anything was wrong with the children and says her children played with their children.

The parents are not in custody but according to court documents the children are in foster care.

KDKA News knocked on the door a man and woman and children were all inside, they came to the door but would not answer any questions.

Police are continuing to investigate.

Pa.’s Clergy Abuse Hotline Got 1,900 Calls Within A Year

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) – Pennsylvania’s top state prosecutor says investigations remain underway after 1,862 calls were made to his office’s clergy abuse hotline in the 12 months since a landmark grand jury report exposed decades of child abuse within the state’s Roman Catholic dioceses.

Attorney General Josh Shapiro said Tuesday that about 90 percent of those calls concerned allegations of abuse or cover-ups within the Catholic church. The rest were about institutions or people outside the Catholic church.

Shapiro calls it “a profoundly impactful experience” that he’s been stopped daily by people who are grateful for the investigation or want to tell him their own stories of victimization.

Pennsylvania dioceses have been evaluating claims and making payments through compensation funds established in the wake of the report.

Westmoreland County (KDKA) — An infant is in UPMC Children’s Hospital, and doctors say he is the victim of shaken baby syndrome.

The 3-month-old boy was in the Huntingdon Village Apartments on Monday when his mother went to work.

The infant was alone with his father, 19-year-old Taylor Joseph Shipley.

The little boy had been sick for a couple of days, and Shipley put him in a bassinette with a bottle.

The baby started crying and choking, so Shipley called 911.

“He was the one who initiated the phone call about the child being ill, appearing blue,” trooper Steve Limani of the Pennsylvania State Police said.

The baby was flown to the hospital and described as limp and blue in the helicopter.

At the hospital, doctors found bleeding on the brain, three fractured ribs, bruising on the abdomen and retinal hemorrhage, all consistent with physical abuse and shaken baby syndrome.

Dr. Adelaide Eichman of Children’s Hospital told the police, according to the affidavit that “…there is no other way the victim could have sustained these injuries other than being physically shaken by someone.”

The affidavis said Shipley told the police he performed CPR on the baby, which is how his son sustained the bruises. He also said the brain bleeding came from him running down the stairs when the ambulance arrived.

When police went to arrest Shipley, he jumped out of a second-story window. He was caught a short time later in New Stanton.

Shipley faces two counts of aggravated assault and one count of endangering the welfare of a child.

The doctors told police the injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.

The mother is not facing any charges.

SEWICKLEY TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A West Newton man is facing assault charges, accused of beating and injuring his girlfriend’s 1-year-old child.

State police say investigators were called to a home on Church Street in Sewickley Township, Westmoreland County, around 6 p.m. Wednesday by the boy’s mother.

According to the criminal complaint, she left the child in the care of her boyfriend while she was at work from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. He is identified by police as Salvatore Salvio.

(Source: Pennsylvania State Police)

Police say when she came home she found her son crying upstairs. He had bruising, swelling and facial injuries, along with puncture marks to both of his feet.

The mother told investigators when she left for work “her child had no injuries and was acting completely normally.”

Police say she confronted Salvio about the injuries, but he denied injuring the boy.

When she tried to leave the home with her son, police say Salvio “threatened to knock her out.”

She was eventually able to make it to a neighbor’s home, where she called for help.

However, Salvio took her cell phone and drove off in her car before police arrived.

Police say Salvio “is a heroin user,” and they say the puncture mark injuries on the child’s feet may be from a syringe.

Salvio is charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, terroristic threats, recklessly endangering another person and harassment.”

Police: Scott Township Father And Mother Charged After 2-Month-Old Son Suffered Skull, Rib Fractures

SCOTT TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A man is charged with abusing his 2-month-old son, causing skull and rib fractures.

The child’s mother is also facing other charges after text messages showed she knew about the alleged abuse, police say.

On Sept. 3, Scott Township Police responded to a home on Bower Hill Road in Scott Township with a medical rescue team after a 911 call was made for a 2-month-old boy that fell in the house.

Police say the baby’s father was the only adult home at the time. He was with the infant and the baby’s 17-month-old brother.

The infant’s father, 34-year-old Michael Koban, is charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

According to Allegheny County, Koban was a telecommunicator with the county and he is currently suspended without pay.

Police say Koban contacted his wife, Ashley Koban, at work and sent her a picture in a text message of the baby with a head injury.

They say Ashley Koban then called 911 and came home from work.

The baby was rushed to Children’s Hospital and evaluated.

When the father was interview by the police, he told them he went into the kitchen to make the baby a bottle when he heard the infant and toddler crying.

Michael Koban told police when he returned, the baby was on the floor with a bump on his head, and he believed the toddler may have accidentally pulled the baby out of the infant swing.

According to Children’s Hospital Child Advocacy Center, the baby had a partial skull fracture, an intracranial hemorrhage, and multiple fractured ribs in different stages of healing — ranging from two weeks to five weeks.

The mother is charged with endangering the welfare of children and obstruction in child abuse cases after police searched her cell phones and found several text messages from Ashley Koban to who police say is her sister.

One said:

“Mike is tough, but never thought rough enough to break bones.”

Another said:

“I have to work and have no one to watch them. I’m sick the whole time I’m gone. The fact that I can’t trust my husband/their father with them is sickening.”

Police say some of the other text messages found on the mother’s phone included her saying she “needed to find a way out of the house.”

Police found searches about shaken baby syndrome and fractured ribs on Michael Koban’s internet history.

It is unclear who is taking care of the couple’s four children.

CARNEGIE, Pa. (KDKA) — A Scott Township man charged with abusing his 2-month-old son, causing skull and rib fractures, appeared in court.

Michael Koban and his wife Ashley Koban — who is also facing charges after text messages showed she knew about the alleged abuse — asked for a postponement Thursday.

Their defense attorney claims the charges are an overreaction.

The mother, Ashley Koban, is charged with endangering the welfare of children and obstruction in child abuse cases after police searched her cell phones and found several text messages from her to who police say is her sister.

Michael Koban is charged with aggravated assault and endangering the welfare of a child.

The couple’s attorney said the injuries are a result of a medical condition, not abuse.

“These people love their child,” defense attorney Wendy Williams said. “This is their fourth child. They would never hurt their son.”

Police have built part of the case based on these text messages from Ashley Koban, which in part say:

“Mike is tough, but never thought rough enough to break bones.”

“I have to work and have no one to watch them. I’m sick the whole time I’m gone. The fact that I can’t trust my husband/their father with them is sickening.”

“They’re taken out of context,” Williams said. “Every marriage has issues. And I would say put that in context, there would be no problem with those. I would say it’s not evidence their father caused injuries.”

As for the injuries, Williams said there was a rush to judgment.

“My experience is, most of these cases, there’s a medical cause for the children’s injuries,” Williams said. “The Child Advocacy Center and (the Office of Children, Youth and Families) do not do a proper investigation before they go out and ruin people’s lives and take their children.”

Michael and Ashley Koban have been released on their own recognizance.

Their four children have been taken from them, and they return to court Oct. 31.

According to Allegheny County, Koban was a telecommunicator with the county and he is currently suspended without pay.

The teenager, who weighed only 70 pounds, was discovered inside the father’s residence on the 500 block of District Road, a rural part of Delaware Township.

KDKA’s Lindsay Ward Reports:

“It was squalor conditions, it was in a country setting,” State Police Lt. Dan Ekis said. “The victim was found just inside the trailer. It wasn’t conditions that children should be living in.”

“He was emaciated, so obviously, we are looking into that,” Mercer County District Attorney Pete Acker said.

Police say the boy’s father is the one that found him and called 911 shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday morning.

“With the charges, there is a level of abuse that led to his death,” Ekis said

“We couldn’t begin to understand what this child went through in 14 short years,” Ekis said. “But obviously, the way he died — especially at the hands of his father — is especially disturbing.”

The teen lived in the home with his father and his 4-year-old sister, police said. The boy was attending cyber school.

Authorities said she was average weight and seemed to be in good health.

The father and his two children moved to Mercer County about a month and a half ago from Allegheny County.

State police say the children’s mother died a few years ago.

KDKA’s Lindsay Ward Reports:

Officials can’t say for certain until an autopsy is complete, but they are not ruling out starvation as a cause of death.

Gonzalez and Bacorn are in the Mercer County Jail. They will be arraigned on Friday.

Parents Suing Kinder Academy Of Robinson For Failing To Notify Parents Of Teacher’s Criminal Conviction And Alleged Abuse

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A Robinson Township Kinder Academy is facing legal trouble after a lawsuit says the facility failed to notify parents of alleged child abuse and the criminal conviction of one of its teachers.

Justin and Melissa Flook filed the 73-page civil suit against the convicted teacher, Mikayla Reznicak, Kinder Academy’s owner Amy Wilsher and the director Colleen Vilsak for damages.

Unfortunately, Melissa and Justin Flook tell KDKA they’ve lived a nightmare since their 2-year-old daughter came home with unexplained bruises and marks on her skin.

“She would say, ‘That teacher’s not nice.’ She said she squeezed her arm. She just didn’t want to go,” said Melissa Flook.

The Flooks say their 2-year-old daughter came home from Kinder Academy with marks on her throat and arm in 2018 and they quickly confronted the daycare.

They said they were lead to believe the involved teacher was fired, but later learned she quit once allegations surfaced.

The parents notified investigators, the Office of Children, Youth and Families got involved, and Reznicak faced multiple felony charges.

She pleaded guilty to a lesser misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of children and will serve three years probation.

But the family claims Kinder Academy refused to notify other parents whose children were under Reznicak’s care.

“Obviously hurting a child is completely unacceptable,” said the couple’s attorney, Mart Harris. “But to know that something is happening and to have the suspicion and to say I think we need to bring that teacher up so we can supervise her more closely and then to not do that- and then this happens.”

Kinder Academy of Kennedy, now Kinder Academy of Robinson, touts itself online as a “healthy, safe and nurturing environment for all children.”

The law firm representing the daycare tells KDKA they will not comment on any pending litigation.

The family’s attorney tells KDKA’s Meghan Schiller that he expects a response from the daycare’s lawyer by Thursday.

‘One Of The Most Violent Cases Of Child Abuse’: Shaler Twp. Mother Now Faces Felony Charges

SHALER TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) – A Shaler Township mother is facing felony charges for allegedly abusing her child in “one of the most violent cases” Children’s Hospital doctors have seen.

Katie Easley is now facing charges alongside father Jamie Easley for the alleged abuse of their newborn daughter, who was admitted to UPMC Children’s Hospital with severe injuries in September.

According to police, the 4-week-old girl was taken to Children’s Hospital after her primary care doctor found multiple bruises on her face and abdomen.

The child’s mother allegedly told the doctor the little girl had not eaten in nearly two days.

At the hospital, doctors found the girl had skull fractures, subdural hemorrhages, 19 rib fractures and other fractures to her left arm and her legs. She was admitted in critical condition to the hospital’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

According to the criminal complaint, Jamie told investigators during a police interview that the baby’s older sibling pulled her off a bed. However, doctors said a fall from a bed would not cause the kind of injuries she had.

Police say Jamie later told them he grabbed the baby girl by the arm while she was crying, held her up, squeezed her and gave her “a quick shake.” Soon after, the baby stopped crying.

Now, police are charging Katie with a felony endangering the welfare of children. The criminal complaint accuses Katie of not taking her critically injured baby to the hospital until the 31-day-old newborn stopped eating all together.

It also says detectives later searched Katie’s phone history and allegedly found Google searches from earlier in the month including “bruising on baby” and “why isn’t my baby eating?”

Police say Children’s Hospital doctors said “given the age of the victim, it was one of the most violent cases of child abuse they have seen, bone in arm completely snapped in half, and the worst rib fractures they have seen.”

KDKA’s Meghan Schiller reports charges against Jamie still stand. Katie was released on non-monetary bond and is slated to go before the judge for her preliminary hearing on Dec. 19.

Four Children And Four Animals Found Living In Unimaginable Filth In Hempfield Township

HEMPFIELD TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — Children and animals were found living in filth inside a home in Westmoreland County and it was actually a call for a dog bite that led humane officers and Westmoreland County Sheriffs Deputies to a Hempfield Township home.

What they found inside, was one of the worst cases of animal and child neglect they had ever seen.

Veteran humane officers Andrea Palmer says she’ll never forget 205 North Drive.

“When you go in there you have to back your feelings, in any case, but this one was really, really hard,” she said.

Palmer was on scene along with law enforcement initially to check in on several animals inside the home.

They would find the animals along with four little boys.

“I hurt for them, I was so, so upset for them, I wanted to pick them up and hold them and take them home,” Palmer recalled.

Four children, six-years-old, all covered in urine and feces. Their clothes were black from filth, hands and feet covered in black sludge, and sleeping on mattresses covered in feces and insects.

A scene unsuitable for human or animal habiation.

“I was taken aback, I was stunned,” Palmer said. “I was like, ‘Oh my god, what is going on here?'”

The children’s parents, 38-year-olds Cloyd and Melissa Zimmerman are charged with felony child and animal neglect.

All of the children were taken by Westmoreland County Child & Youth Services.

Then, there were the pets.

Two dogs and two cats. The cats were okay, but the dogs were living like everyone else, in unimaginable squalor.

“They were both in a cage when we got there, the one dog was not in good shape, had an open sore,” Palmer said.

All the animals are now receiving veterinary care and are expected to recover.

As a mother and grandmother, the children are what will haunt Andrea Palmer.

“This is the first time I’ve ever had to deal with children, it was devastating,” she said. “We really need justice for this.”

Cloyd and Melissa Zimmerman are both free tonight on $25,000 and $50,000 unsecured bond.

SHALER TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A Shaler Township father facing felony charges for allegedly abusing his child in “one of the most violent cases” officials have ever seen has hired a team of attorneys who insist his wife is guilty.

Jamie waived his hearing on Thursday and got one count of aggravated assault taken off his list of charges.

He is still facing one felony charge for endangering the welfare of children.

On Thursday, Jamie’s attorneys — Blaine Jones and Angela Hayden — seemed pleased with the actions in court

“We take what we can get as a defense,” Hayden said. “We got a charge knocked off. It makes our job a little easier”

Jamie left the courtroom crying on Thursday.

“He hasn’t been proven guilty of anything,” Jones said. “In fact, you saw the tears, you saw the crying, you saw the emotion. He misses his family”

PITTSBURGH (KDKA)–A Pittsburgh man is jail tonight after allegedly beating three children.

Police are charging 30-year-old Randall Blair with one count of strangulation several counts of endangering the welfare of children, and recklessy endangering another person.

According to the criminal complaint three children were taken to Children’s Hospital for their injuries.

One of the vicitms told medical staff Blair hit her with his hands and a belt while in the fetal position.

Blair is accused of leaning on the child during the beating which drove his finger into her eye. Doctors found her eye had been bleeding.

Another victim said Blair would choke her in addition to beating her with his hands and belt. She told officers she and another victim missed school because they were being beaten.

Hospital staff found a 2-year-old victim to have scabs and bruises on his body. The child tested positive for cocaine.

The Children Youth and Families caseworker assigned to the family found deplorable living conditions for the children and said their basic medical needs were not met.

Police also found the children were not adequately fed.

One of the victims told investigators an example of a meal was a box of macaroni and cheese, mixed with a can of tuna. That would be distributed among 5 children.

Another victim said she was hungry and found no food in the home and was not able to eat.

Blair was arraigned Sunday morning on his charges and was not able to post the $5,000 bond.
